Canyoning

Canyoning is the ultimate adventure that is now one of the world's fastest growing adventure sports. Be aware that this is an extreme sport. Whilst no experience is required, the right attitude is important. The day is long, about 6 hours, so a good level of fitness is required. Our guides are very experienced and professional and all equipment is provided.

The canyoning tour starts from the office in Kaş with a transfer to the canyon. Before starting our trained guides give a full briefing about the equipment we use and safety. Our most popular canyon is Kibris, about 10km from Sütlegen.

Usually we start early so have breakfast before setting off! Upon arrival we get the equipment ready and then we're off! According to the size and ability of the group it can take anything from 5 to 7 hours to finish and then we return to Kas.

Utilising a mixture of climbing and caving techniques, we follow the watercourse of the canyon, until it becomes a river. Bring lightweight boots or walking shoes. Some decents require the use of ropes and harnesses. Dry or wet, they are sometimes challenging but always spectacular.

Jump into the clear cool pools of water, abseiling down waterfalls. Sometimes swimming through narrow passages, sometimes climbing boulders, sometimes walking. The descents are made wearing wet suits and carrying waterproof packs and containers.

We use several local canyons including the famous Saklikent gorge. All you need is a head for heights, the ability to swim and a taste for adventure. An adrenalin pumping experience.

Cultural Tours

Sunken city of Kekova

Kekova is the biggest island of Turkey on the Mediterrenean coast.

It dates back to the 5th century BC, when Lycia was an important kingdom in this region. The ancient city of Simena which now lies in Kekova was once of two parts - an island and a coastal part of the mainland. Across the bay, along the island are the half-submerged ruins of the residential part of Simena, caused by the downward shift of land by the terrible earthquakes of the 2nd century AD.

As you slide over the calm waters, you can see the remains of buildings and walls beneath your boat - staircases to nowhere - which feels very strange. Foundations of buildings and the ancient harbor are also seen below the sea. The ancient city of Simena lies on the eastern peninsula of Tristomas Bay. The site of ancient Simena which dates back to the 4th century BC usually has to be reached by boat.

The castle was built on the foundations of an ancient citadel. Part of Simena can be found inside the castle walls alongside the remains of an ancient temple. Below the fortifications stands a seven-tiered theater with space for more than 300 spectators which shows that the Simena was a rather small city.

To the west is the town and in the water on the shore line underwaterlie the well maintained ruins of the Titus Baths. Further west can be found a necropolis which contains mostly Roman sarcophagi in the Lycian style. More sarcophagi and other ruins are to be seen underwater.

Church of Sankt Nicolaus

Do you know that Santa Claus is turkish ?

Though there is a conflict of opinions as to when Myra was first occupied, and as there is no mention of it before the 1st century B.C. it is generally agreed that Myra came into prominence in the 5th century B.C. In the 1st century B.C.

Myra that comes from the word "Myrrh" was a commanding city of the Lycian Union and was chosen over Xanthos by Constantine in early Byzantine times as the capital of Lycia. Myra also used to be an important port during the Roman times.

One of the most famous bishops of Myra is St. Nicholas, who lived in the early years of the 4th century A.D.

He was a great philanthropist and has gone down the annals of history as Santa Claus. After his death, Myra was converted to a rich pilgrimage center and many churches were built. This city however was abandoned following an Arab invasion in the 9th century A.D. Many natural disasters followed, which led to its complete desertion in the 11th century A.D. The Turks went to Myra only to find it as a devastated region; presently Myra lies buried because of the sediment deposition in its port.

Ancient town of Xanthos

When we talk about the Xanthos valley we're talking about Lycia, an ancient maritime district of southwestern Anatolia.

The Lycians crop up as far back as the 14th Century BC when they appear in records of the Egyptian, Hittite, and Ugaritic peoples. Their territory was then described as wedged between the Hittites on the north and the Achaean Greeks on the coast. Under Achaemenian Persia and later under the rule of the Romans, Lycia enjoyed relative freedom and was able to preserve its federal institutions until the time of Augustus.

It was annexed to Roman Pamphylia in AD 43 and became a separate Roman province after the 4th century. From a touristy point of view the nice thing about the Lycians is that they built their cities on top of things. This makes them easier to find and means that when you get there the view is usually pretty good. It's easy to recognise dead Lycians because of the characteristic funerary architecture they implied.

The 'house' tombs carved into cliff faces have become an icon of this part of Turkey and the sarcophagi that surround the city sites are equally distinctive.

Tlos

Located 28 kilometres from Fethiye, Tlos is one of the oldest residential areas of Lycia and one of the few cities which continued to be inhabited until the 19th Century. It was known as “the sports centre” of the Lycian Federation.

Tlos was the home of the mythological winged-horse Pegasus and his rider Bellerophon, who crashed to earth after boasting to the gods. Bellerophon’s temple tomb is beautifully situated on the cliff face. Other structures remaining from Tlos’ early period include the acropolis, the stadium and bath complex, and the theatre

Meis (Kastellorizo)

Meis, or Kastellorizo, is a very pleasant day trip from Kas.

This tiny Dodecanese island with its population of a couple of hundred, sits opposite the harbour of Kas and in the day time you could be forgiven for thinking it is uninhabited as the port town on the landward side can be a little hard to spot. At night however the lights of the houses, shops and restuarants along the promenade twinkle enticingly across the moonlight bay.

Kastellorizo has an interesting history of its own, governed by Rhodes, Egypt, the Venetian Doge and the Ottoman Turks. It's 20th century history gets much more complicated with the little island passing through the hands of the French, Italians and the British.

The events leading up to and including the 2nd World War pretty much decimated the island and its population and the fact that there's anybody here at all is a testament to the islanders determination to keep their community alive
